Sly Stone’s wedding at Madison Square Garden
Sly Stone and his Fiancé may have had his number one song playing while they were walking down the aisle, however their wedding guest list was anything but a family affair. Instead of having an intimate gathering of friends and family, the eccentric funk singer and his future wife decided to add another F word to their wedding guest list – Fans.
In June 1974 Sly decided to tie the knot with Model-Actress Kathy Silva in front of 21,000 guests while on stage at the Madison Square Garden in New York. The idea started when a friend suggested their marriage should be the opening act at one of Sly’s concerts. This idea escalated and eventually the spectacle became reality, including Soul Train host Don Cornelius serving as MC and talk show host Geraldo Rivera as an usher.
Here we have some rarely seen footage of the on-stage wedding and the reception that followed at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Like many celebrity couples they didn’t live happy ever after, Sly and Kathy divorced just five months after the spectacular wedding.
