Soul singer Gwen McGrae, Voices of East Anglia favourites Chicago, Blood, Sweat and Tears (above), The Cyrcle with their red rubber ball and soul band The Tymes are just some of the artists featured in this 1971 publication.

Insight magazine was published by the Columbia Records Merchandising Department to promote their latest releases of the time to record shops around America.

Here we have a few covers and some pages from a copy of the seventies magazine. Included are some pages promoting lesser-known acts from the label, such as Moondog – who was sampled by Mr Scruff for his Jazzy Get a Move on and Jazz Funk combo Dreams (last picture) Their bassist Doug Lubahn played on three albums by The Doors – Strange Days, Waiting For The Sun, and The Soft Parade. The band didn’t have much commercial success, however they did play a part in launching the careers of Jazz fusion artists like Billy Cobham, Don Grolnick, and Randy & Michael Brecker -The Brecker Brothers.

In our groovy gallery we have an unhappy woman with a Jazz band promoting the wonders of Colgate toothpaste, Some Action in a Bowling alley with a Dymo Labelwriter and a very serious looking lady with her dressing table in the great outdoors.

What’s So Bad About Feeling Good? is the everyday tale of a former advertising executive Pete (George Peppard) who lives within a Beatnik community in a loft in New York, a stow-away Toucan which carries a happiness virus that spreads through the Big Apple and Pete’s girlfriend Liz (Mary Tyler Moore) who is immune to the bird’s jolly disease.

Although the film spread happiness through New York for 94 minutes (until the government find a cure) the 1968 film was a box office flop and to date has never been released on DVD.

The director of the comedy George Seaton would have more success later when his film Airport became the second highest-grossing film of 1970.

Occasionally the whole film will pop up on You Tube or it’ll be shown on an obscure cable television station, but in the meantime daddios enjoy this short clip of disease-ridden dancing Beatniks and a bearded rooftop trumpeter.

In 1970 Miles Davis released his ground breaking Jazz fusion album Bitches Brew, in the same year fellow trumpeter Chet Baker attempted to crossover and attract rock music fans with his LP Blood, Chet and Tears.

The album is known as a “Guilty Pleasure” for Chet Baker fans as it’s far from straight Jazz and could be considered his “Sell out” record. On the LP he pays tribute to Blood, Sweat and Tears with the album title and a cover of Spinning Wheel. He also covers The Beatles – Something, The Box Tops – The Letter, The Archies – Sugar Sugar, The Sandpipers – Come Saturday morning and Laura Nyro – And When I Die.

Embedded for your listening pleasure are covers of Vehicle by The Ides of March and Chet’s version of Santana’s Evil Ways.

In the past we’ve posted guitar, amplifier and synthesizer adverts, now we tinkle the ivories and pull out all the stops as we take a look at a few magazine adverts for organs.

The first advertisement is from an issue of Downbeat Magazine, it features the iconic Hammond organ which was used by everyone – from the local church organist to Deep Purple’s keyboardist Jon Lord.

Then we have a few far-out adverts for the psychedelic sound of the Farfisa organ for the action crowd. Meanwhile a Liberace look-alike, Batman and Robin promote the sound of the Hohner. And keeping with the super hero theme we finish with Patrice Rushden of Forget-me-nots fame plugging the funky Rhodes organ “If she did any more with a Rhodes, She’d be Wonder Woman”

VOEA Hammond Organ Fact

Apart from producing numerous solo albums, the legendary Jazz organist Jimmy Smith performed the organ solo on Michael Jackson’s 1987 hit Bad.

As the strap-line says ‘a sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal’. Yes, welcome to the world of slightly odd American foodstuffs and what our cousins across the pond call Sloppy Joe sauce. Consisting of a seasoned tomato sauce and cooked ground beef this is considered a meal in itself and obviously a bit more substantial than your common or garden sandwich.

The Manwich brand was first introduced in 1969 as a quick and easy one-pan recipe meaning busy moms could quickly prepare meals for the whole family when time was tight. It is still going strong now with an expanded range and by all accounts is still a family favourite across the 52 states.

Have a look at some of their original mouth-watering recipes and as the good people at Manwich say, ‘You’ll find Manwich a handy helper in meal planning, you’ll find its vitamins and minerals and aid in maintaining body functions in co-operation with other food nutrients’. Get those body functions maintained and check out a tin of Manwich today.

Blue-eyed soul is one of those terms used when we try to pigeon-hole an artist and is often used when the artist in question sounds anything but blue-eyed. When you’ve got one of those voices that make people question your colour because it transcends conventional boundaries you know you’ve got a rare talent and Linda Lyndell had such a voice.

Born Linda Rowland in Florida in 1946 her vocal talents were recognised at a young age and Linda spent much of her early life singing in gospel choirs in both white and black churches. She progressed to become a support act to Ike & Tine Turner and also the man himself James Brown (no mean feat for a white girl at the time). Stax Records were alerted to her singing skills when none other than Otis Redding tipped Stax in-house songwriters Isaac Hayes and David Porter the wink and in 1967 her first single ‘Bring Your Love Back to Me’ was released on the Stax sister label Volt. This didn’t trouble the charts but unperturbed the label persisted with young Linda and the following year recorded and released ‘What a Man’ which went on to reach number 50 in the Billboard Charts.

In response to the relative success of the single and presumably because she was a white woman who sounded like a black singer the local chapter of the Klu Klux Klan went ahead and threatened Lyndell suggesting she curtail her singing career before they made her life a misery. In addition she also received threats from members of the African-American community and feeling somewhat unloved (and you can’t blame her really) Linda Lyndell decided to retire from performing and didn’t sing a note in public for 25 years.

Fast forward to 1993 and Cheryl James, Sandra Denton & Deidra Roper also known as Salt-N-Pepa (for the record James was Salt, Denton was Pepa and Roper was DJ Spinderella) along with their then producer Hurby ‘Luv Bug’ Azor stumbled across a copy of ‘What a Man’ and the rest, as they say, is history. Salt-N-Pepa released ‘Whatta Man’ in December 1993 and it went on to become a global hit. En Vogue also recorded a version the following year which went on to have similar worldwide success.

Following on from this success Linda Lyndell started performing again and in 2003 sang ‘What a Man’ live for the first time ever. Having kept an understandably low profile for almost 30 years Linda is now augmenting her career as a landscape gardener with occasional singing performances presumably now without threats from those who seem to resent a white woman with a great and unique voice.

During his time Stevie Wonder has duetted with plenty of artists. Some of the songs produced have been good (Gary Byrd – The Crown) and some have been bad (Blue and Bono to name but two)

Here we have a clip of Stevie performing with The Rolling Stones on stage when he joined them on their legendary 1972 tour. The Stones had just released their Exile on main street album and Stevie Wonder had just unleashed a new tune called Superstition – which was originally offered to Jeff Beck, who created the original drum beat with Stevie in the studio.

So sit back, relax and enjoy this rarely seen live performance – satisfaction guaranteed.

Berry Gordy was not only a very clever chap when it came to spotting talent and developing a record label that went on to conquer the world he was also a bit of a marketing whizz too. It’s no coincidence that Motown got it right almost all the time and Gordy kept a very tight rein on everything that went out of the doors at Hitsville including all the promotional gumph. He did though get it a little wrong on occasion and this is probably not his finest moment.

Ladies and gentlemen we present to you The Supremes Special Formula White Bread. Quite where the link between a black girl group and white bread comes in is difficult to fathom but to be fair white sliced bread was a big seller at the time and presumably an excellent way to get extra publicity through placing the band’s name on every breakfast table. We’re not sure how successful this particular piece of bread based publicity was but it must have made even a small amount of dough for Motown who would have received a reasonable slice of the profits. Mind you with their success at the time it’s not as if they were short of a crust or two (alright, enough of the bread related buns; sorry I mean puns, already).

We’ve been to France to check out some chic Paris Match covers and stopped off in Italy to look at some groovy advertising from the swinging sixties. This time we head to Portugal to flick through the pages of Gente (People) magazine in the mid-seventies.

These scans come from issues that were published in 1974 and 1975. The Portuguese publication focuses on Celebrities, gossip and human-interest stories ( It’s the sort of magazine you see on the table of your local hairdressers or Medical Centre)

Apart from an article featuring a beret wearing Groucho Marx and Roger Moore and Britt Ekland promoting The Man With The Golden Gun, we’ve turned our attention to the advertising in the magazine, from a Psychedelic Singer sewing machine advert to an ad for Air conditioning units – Cool!
